History Of Chiropractic

The founding father of chiropractic, Dr. D.D. Palmer, developed a theory that spinal misalignment caused nerve pressure or irritation which in turn caused various ailments. He realized that the structure and condition of the body influenced how the body functioned and its ability to heal itself, without the use of drugs or surgery. This simple philosophy has healed people and has prevented unwanted injury and illness for over a century! But to fully understand the chiropractic perspective, one must learn a bit about the nervous system, or how our bodies are "wired".

The Body's Wiring

The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The brain is divided into sections and stores and receives an incredible amount of information. But this information needs a way to get in and out. Nerves provide a pathway for this information to travel, and the spinal cord is made up of bundles of these nerves. The spine both houses and protects the spinal cord. Nerve dysfunctions can result from any number of factors such as falls, accidents, stress, tension, or over use. These events can alter our "wiring" and create pain or discomfort in our bodies.

Getting to the Source of Pain

Doctors of Chiropractic are trained to locate the source of pain or disconfort (it may actually be far from the actual location where the symptom is occurring) and then they correct or adjust the joints in the body and set it up to heal on its own. The misalignment is called a subluxation.

The important thing to remember is that chiropractic success occurs by addressing the source of the problem, not just treating the symptoms.

Plugging in to Optimal Health:

Because helping the body heal itself involves many facets chiropractors also provide lifestyle advice to help prevent illness and injury. Diet and nutrition, fitness and ergonomics, and other areas in your life contribute or diminish your overall health. By making the right choices one can live a life full of wellness and vitality.

How Does it Work?

What Happens On The First Visit?

Like other health care providers, we follow a standard routine to gain information about the patient. We consult, review the case history, conduct a physical examination, and we may request laboratory analysis and/or x-rays.

He also conducts a careful analysis of the patients posture, symptoms and lifestyle.

What Happens On The Second Visit?

Like other health care providers, we follow a standard routine to gain information about the patient. We consult, review the case history, conduct a physical examination, and we may request laboratory analysis and/or x-rays.

He also conducts a careful analysis of the patients posture, symptoms and lifestyle.

Maintaining Your Health

Like other health care providers, we follow a standard routine to gain information about the patient. We consult, review the case history, conduct a physical examination, and we may request laboratory analysis and/or x-rays.

Foward Head Posture or F.H.P.

The effects of posture on health are becoming more evident. "Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse, and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by posture. The corollary of these observations is that any symptoms, including pain, may be moderated or eliminated by improved posture".

Damaging Effects
Ideally the head should sit directly on the neck and shoulders, like a golf ball sits on a tee. The weight of the head is more like a bowling ball than a golf ball so holding it forward, out of alignment, puts a strain on your neck and upper back muscles. The result can be muscle fatigue and all too often an aching neck. Because the neck and shoulders have to carry this weight all day in an isometric contraction, this causes the neck muscles to lose blood, get damages, fatigue, strain, cause pain, burning and fibromyalgia. When spinal tissues are subject to a significant load for a sustained period of time, they deform and undergo remodeling changes that could become permanent.
This is why it takes time to correct F.H.P. In addition, F.H.P. has been shown to flatten the normal neck curve, resulting in compression, damage and early arthritis. This abnormal position is also responsible for many tension headaches, often a term called cervicogenic headaches.

F.H.P. is relatively easy to detect. If you were to draw an imaginary line from the center of the shoulder up - it should land through the middle of the ears hole. Any forward head posture should be checked by your chiropractor. Medical doctors typically do not fix this type of problem.

Monitoring good posture is a lifetime commitment. With a little effort and good chiropractor on your healthcare team you can be assured a future doing things you love to do, rather than suffering from damage and degeneration that poor posture can bring.

Common Causes
Backpacks - children are now using backpacks to carry school books weighing up to an alarming 30 - 40 lbs! This forces the head forward to counter balance the weight resulting in abnormal stress to the discs, joints and nerves of the neck, shoulders and lower back.
Computer Ergonomics - Positioning computer screens too low couple with repetitive motion of moving the head forward to read the screen is a primary factor in F.H.P.
Video Games / T.V. - Most children use poor posture when playing video games and watching T.V. Repetitively sitting in one position for long periods of time causes the body to adapt to this bad posture
Trauma - Falls and traumas can cause whiplash resulting in muscle imbalance. This pulls the spine out of alignment forcing the head forward.
Solutions
1. The first step in correction is to be examined and x-rayed by your chiropractor, to identify the exact measurements of the FHP. Once that is established, a specific corrective care program for F.H.P. is given, including adjustments and specific exercises. Your chiropractor will point out poor ergonomics and situations that predispose you to F.H.P. and give you practical solutions.
2. For office use and video game play place your computer monitor height so the top third of your screen is even with your eyes and the screen is 18" - 24" from your face. Support the lower back. If children sit on the floor looking upward, have them use a floor pillow or arm chair and sit up straight.
3. Every 20 - 30 minutes, sit up straight and pull the neck and head back over your shoulders. Hold for the count of 3 and do 15 - 20 reps. Alternatively, stand against a wall with a small pillow at your mid back. Move your head back to touch the wall. Hold for a count of 3 and do 15 - 20 reps.
4. Always use a back support pillow when driving or sitting. By supporting the lower back, the head and the neck will move back over the shoulders.
5. At home, lay face down on the floor and extend your head and shoulders up, while pinching your shoulder blades together. Hold for a count of 3 and do 15 - 20 reps.
6. Backpacks - maximum backpack weight should be 15% of your child's weight. Never wear backpacks over one shoulder. Always wear a waist belt, and if available, a chest belt to neutralize the load. Without these belts, the head will move forward to compensate for the load. A new type of backpack with an air bladder has been shown to significantly reduce without a strap!

Understanding the Importance of Their Nervous System

First and foremost is the understanding that your child's brain and nervous system controls and coordinates every function of he body, including the immune system, biochemistry, and hormones. Your child's nervous system also controls how the body heals and regulates. Thus, you want to make sure that your child's spine and nervous system are developing and functioning properly; in our view, the best educated and expert to determine this is a Doctor of Chiropractic.

History and Evaluation

After taking a proper history about your child and doing an evaluation, a Doctor of Chiropractic will determine the extent of your child's interference in the nervous system, which is typically a subluxation or minor misalignment of the vertebrae. All children, from birth onward, should be checked on a regular basis to determine whether there are spinal postural alterations, which can negatively affect the child's nervous system and the way the child's body heals and regulates.

Influencing Their Health Through Nutrition

What goes into your child's body for the first year of life is essential to influence their health. It is recommended that a child is breastfed exclusively for the first 6 - 9 months, before one vegetable or fruit is introduced. Then slowly introduce new foods individually every 4 - 7 days, As long as the child's nervous system is being evaluated properly, the child should usually be able to digest and assimilate the right foods properly. Dairy products, hydrogenated oils or trans fats, refined sugars, fruit juices and processed foods should be avoided in your child's diet. As parents, it is important for you to be a role model and set up healthy eating habits.

Maximizing Health

Exercise is also paramount in maximizing the health, coordination and fitness level of your child. It is important to keep them away from the television and computer so they remain physically and mentally active. This will ensure that they maximize their immune system and brain function, provided they maintain their spinal care and remain subluxation free.

Enrivonmental Health

Last but certainly not least, you want your children to be raised in a loving, positive and supportive environment where there is a connection between parents and children. You always want to ensure that they feel safe and protected. This creates a sense of well-being for the children to flourish. Children are designed to be healthy, but the better understanding we have as parents, the more we will be able to take control and make better decisions for their health and well-being.
